Background
The Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) is an independent, non-political humanitarian organization that was founded in April 1963 and was established with presidential decree No. 187 in 1965. It was then recognized by the ICRC in 1969 and in the same year became a member of the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent societies.
Overall, Job Purpose
Conduct health screenings and appraisal of infants and children to detect conditions of severe acute malnutrition. Provide early intervention and treatment by ensuring nutrition support through provision of therapeutic food, routine drugs, including health and nutrition education by following the safest and most effective therapeutic feeding protocol in line with SRCS health policy guidelines and nursing standards
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Programme Implementation
- Ensure the screening area is well organized, all essential materials/equipment are in place and he/she wears a uniform.
- Train, support and supervise screeners when conducting anthropometric measurements (Muac, weight, height, odema check, use z-socre paper).
- Ensure that nutritional protocol is strictly followed in terms of admission and discharge criteria.
- Improve case management for severe/moderate acute malnutrition children in OTP/TSFP program and ensure that all malnourished children are treated according to IMAM protocol.
- To reduce nutritional defaulter rate to acceptable by calling caretakers whose children are in the program a day before, and do home visits when needed, update nutrition defaulter register.
- Ensure that the nutrition data quality measures are implemented as per SRCS standard procedures (HMIS/DHIS2 data matches with data in the registers, Referral documents done as per referral SOPs and all required reports are submitted complete and timely manner).
- Ensure that the performance indicators of OTP/TSFP program are in line with national sphere standard
- Conduct health screenings and appraisal of children to detect conditions of severe/Moderate acute malnutrition
- Perform daily nursing tasks required in the daily care for children with severe/moderate acute malnutrition, which includes administration of routine medicine, therapeutic feed preparation, and monitoring of vital signs
- Ensure referred patients are correctly diagnosed and meet referral criteria, patient explained reasons for referral, transportation cost is catered for by SRCS and inform patient/caretaker phone and driver will be called for verification purpose.
- Provide health and nutrition education to mothers on hand hygiene, and exclusive breastfeeding, and Advise mothers on the appropriate time to introduce complementary feeding and promote the continuation of Breastfeeding up to 2 years old.
- Conduct home visits and follow-up discharged patients and provide continuity of care
- Evaluate healthcare outcomes on SAM cases and prepare individualized reports
- Raise requisitions for replenishment of drugs, consumable supplies and SAM therapeutic feeds
- Compile accurate data on all OTD/SAM cases and prepare monthly reports
Operations Management
- Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of the OPD health programme line with strategic priorities
- Identify capacity-building needs of the auxiliary and volunteer nursing team and ensure they are properly trained and well supported to implement programme activities
- Participate in emergency preparedness, rapid assessments and emergency responses
Partnerships/Relationships
- Develop and enhance relationships with strategic partners, donors, local authorities and community leaders to maximize support for maternal and child health
- Represent SRCS in relevant conferences, seminars, workshops and meetings
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the SRSC Senior Management
