Job Description

Mission and objectives

UNICEF Ethiopia is implementing a 5-year country programme 2020-2025 which is fully aligned with the UNSDCF. UNICEF will work collaboratively within the UNSDCF on a joint strategy to strengthen national systems for data collection, analysis, monitoring and applying adjustments to promote equity. Evidence will be used to monitor the situation of children, tracking progress towards equity and scale, and to inform advocacy to adjust policies, strategies and budgets. Monitoring and corrective actions will be undertaken through UNICEF staff, partners and third-party monitoring, and through mechanisms for community feedback and accountability to affected populations.

Context

This Online Volunteer assignment supports UNICEF Education section’s resource mobilization and fundraising efforts, specifically to advance the implementation of the fundraising strategy for priority education programmes for scale-up. The assignment focuses on analytical and preparatory work to strengthen UNICEF’s engagement with potential partners and donors during a time of a rapidly evolving funding landscape. The Online Volunteer will contribute to background research, donor mapping, and the preparation of basic concept notes and proposals, helping to position UNICEF’s education programme more strategically for fundraising and partnership development.

Task Description

Under the supervision of the designated supervisor, the Online Volunteer will support fundraising strategy implementation through the following duties:

  • Conduct structured donor mapping by identifying and researching approximately 12–24 potential donors relevant to UNICEF’s education programme priorities, including foundations, bilateral donors, private companies, diaspora organisations, and other partners;
  • Compile donor profiles summarising funding priorities, geographic focus areas, past funding patterns, and alignment with UNICEF’s mandate;
  • Support the development and refinement of fundraising pitch materials, including short concept notes and briefing summaries for potential donors;
  • Organize and systematize donor-related information to support internal coordination and follow-up;
  • Provide ad hoc analytical or desk-based support related to resource mobilization, as required.
  • Participate as needed in meetings with potential donor partners

Skills and qualifications

Required experience

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in international development, economics, social sciences, business administration, public policy, partnerships, education, or a related field is required, with a Master’s degree in a relevant discipline being preferred. Candidates should have at least three years of progressively responsible experience in research and analytical work, ideally in the context of development programmes, partnerships, or fundraising. Familiarity with donor landscapes, resource mobilization efforts, and external partnerships is considered an asset, and experience supporting proposal development—such as drafting concept notes, funding proposals, or donor briefing materials—is highly desirable.
